CASE STORY
Using Kyo-Yuzen techniques associated with kimono, Japan's traditional clothing, this project expresses the sari, India's traditional attire. The base is a create ebara textile woven with koaoi — one of the yusoku monyo, the classical patterns refined in the Heian imperial court — connecting forms of attire rooted in different cultures.
Kyo-Yuzen
This piece uses the traditional Kyo-Yuzen techniques associated with kimono to express the sari, India's traditional attire. Dyeing is layered over a textile carrying a thousand-year-old pattern, connecting forms of dress rooted in different cultures.
Textile Detail
The textile used for this piece is woven with koaoi, one of the representative yusoku patterns used for court dress and furnishings during the Heian period. Its orderly rows of small aoi motifs carry the elegance and dignity of Japan's court culture and have been passed down through kimono, obi, and woven textiles.
Seen up close, the small aoi motifs emerge through the weave. This delicate woven surface receives and enriches the Kyo-Yuzen dyeing.
